During the Christmas period Umbria turns into an enchanted place. In this region, Christmas is in fact a unique experience: Nativity plays, Christmas markets and traditions that date back centuries. The city of Todi, with its medieval charm, represents the perfect starting point to explore Christmas celebrations in the surrounding areas. Here are some of the main must-do traditions and activities for anyone choosing to spend Christmas in Umbria.

Artistic Nativities and plays: diving into history

The Nativity is the quintessential Christmas symbol in Umbria, as the region is deeply connected to Saint Francis, the creator of the first Nativity in Greccio in 1223. In Todi and the surrounding cities, artistic nativities and plays draw visitors from around the world. Todi’s historical centre stages artisan and theme- based Nativity scenes, often set up along the medieval streets, creating a cosy route that young and old alike can appreciate.

Near Todi, the Nativity Play of Bettona is one of the area’s most famous. The streets of the village come to life with people in costume, artisans at work and traditional music, offering a magical experience.

Christmas markets and festive atmosphere

During the holidays, Todi fills with lights and decorations that enhance its timeless charm. In fact anyone seeking unique and hand-crafted quality gifts absolutely must visit the Christmas markets. Stalls selling pottery, hand-woven fabrics and local delicacies such as torroni and panpepati are set up along the streets of the centre.

In Perugia, just a short distance away, the market held underground in the Rocca Paolina is a unique experience, with local artisans displaying their wares in an atmosphere imbued in history.

Lighting of the Christmas trees

One of the most spectacular Christmas events in Umbria is the lighting of the Christmas trees. In addition to decorated trees in town squares, there are very special ones that draw visitors from far and wide. In the heart of the city, musical performances and Christmas carolling are organised around the lighting of the Christmas tree.

Although it is a bit further away, the Christmas tree of Gubbio, the largest in the world, is a must-see. It can be seen for many kilometres, and is lit on Decembre 7 with a spectacular ceremony.

Christmas concerts and musical traditions

Music is an essential part of Christmas festivities in Umbria. In Todi and the surrounding areas, choirs and orchestras offer concerts that range from classical music to traditional songs. The Cathedral holds sacred music concerts every Christmas, while local choirs perform in churches and squares.
In Orvieto Gospel is a much-awaited holiday event for music enthusiasts, with international artists performing in venues that offer great ambience. Umbria Jazz Winter is held from December 28 to January 1 2025.

Christmas cuisine: flavours and traditions

Christmas in Umbria would not be complete without tasting the local specialties. During the holidays, the restaurants and trattorias of Todi offer traditional menus that celebrate the local flavours. Typical desserts such as Panpepato (sweet cake with dried fruit, nuts and spices), Torciglione (almond paste-based cake in the shape of a snake) and Rocchi are musts at Umbrian tables.
