Perugia 1416 is holding its eighth edition: from Thursday 13 June to Sunday 16 June 2024 Perugia will take a dive into the past, from Medieval to Renaissance times, to relive a fascinating historical period full of events and thrills. Perugia 1416 allows visitors to experience life within the town walls, where the 5 historical ‘Rioni’ (districts) challenge each other in sports games and engage the audience in detailed re-enactments, offering great fun.
1416: the historical background
Perugia 1416 is carried out, as is now tradition, around the second weekend of the month of June. The event celebrates Braccio Fortebraccio da Montone’s official arrival in Perugia: a mercenary leader and protagonist of legendary events, he gave the city of Perugia works of great utility and beauty, which are still visible today. In fact, in 1416, Braccio began his conquest of Perugia after the siege of Bologna, which he later freed. The great battle against Carlo Malatesta, serving as the defender of the Perugini for the Church, was fought on July 12th in Sant’Egidio. It terminated with Braccio da Montone’s crushing victory and the beginning of the Signorìa.
The districts of Perugia are still ready to compete against each other in 2023
During the 4 days of Perugia 1416, the districts of Perugia Porta Eburnea, Porta San Pietro, Porta Sant’Angelo, Porta Santa Susanna and Porta Sole, will welcome tourists with re-enactments, shows and games of that period. For the occasion, the Rules of the association will be based on the ancient district lines and historical sources and testimonials.
A programme full of events
Once again, the programme offers a great number of events, also thanks to the success of the eighth edition, when more than 30 events were held, mainly organised in the blocks between Corso Vannucci, piazza IV Novembre, piazza Matteotti and via Baglioni.
