The Palio dei Terzieri is back on in Città della Pieve. What’s more, 2023 marks its 50th edition. The Palio dei Terzieri is an event where tradition, wine, food and fun come together so that tourists can experience unique moments.
In 2023, the Palio dei Terzieri will be held from Tuesday the 8th of August until Sunday the 20th August. This is the programme.
The 50th edition of the ‘palio dei terzieri’
The Palio dei Terzieri is celebrating its 50th edition: Città della Pieve is ready to welcome tourists with enchanting sets and traditional costumes, with osterias offering a wealth of typical products, such as ‘lo Stinco dell’arciere’ (archer’s ham hock) from the Borgo Dentro district, gnocchi del Priore (the prior’s gnocchi) from the Castello district and Lumache al Pizzico (pizzico style snails) from the Casalino district. The Palio is not just a contest where the districts compete in the ancient sport of archery, but it is a true battle of entertainment. In fact every district has days dedicated to their traditions.
The programme for 2023
• On 8th – 9th August the Casalino district opens the Palio with a brand new play and the historical re-enactment of La Notte del Barbacane (The Night of the Barbican), which will be on the evening of Wednesday 9th August 2023.
• From 10th -12th August Borgo Dentro will host its events, with games, plays and falconry shows.
• On 13th and 14th August 2023 the star of the events of Città della Pieve will be the Castello district, which will open the first evening of the Fiera di San Rocco, in honour of the Patron Saint.
Final evening: Sunday 20th August 2023
The events will continue with the Districts alternating their initiatives until the final contest: Sunday 20th August, at 5pm, the parades of the 3 districts will head towards the Campo di li Giochi (the playing field) for the final champion archery contest. The districts’ historical parades mean a great deal to the Palio contest: in fact, a jury composed of costume and Italian renaissance history experts will choose the person who best represents the colours of the district and will award them the Masgalano prize.
From Todi to Città della Pieve
The distance between Todi and Città della Pieve is roughly 38 kilometres. The drive takes about one hour, along the charming roads of Umbria.
