The holidays are around the corner, and in Umbria the Christmas markets are among the many festive events and activities. Numerous towns in the green heart of Italy – including Todi – are ready to welcome, in the hill-top historical centres, medieval squares and quaint hamlets, all the magic of Christmas market stalls with their unique atmosphere of lights and decorations, the sound of bells and jingle bells and the unmistakeable scent of roasted chestnuts.
Therefore here is a list of the main events for Christmas markets in Umbria.
Todi now hosts Christmas Markets as well
Christmas markets are new to Todi, and this will certainly help make the city even more unique and enchanting than usual, with a magical and romantic Christmas atmosphere.
In addition to the many initiatives hosted in the historical centre for the “The lights of Todi” event, just a short step away from the heart of town, in the Porta Romana area, there will be brand new markets offering local craftwork, gift ideas, wine and food and typical local products.
The “Christmas at Porta Romana” event also offers entertainment for children, little shows and workshops, story telling, concerts and a charming Santa’s Elves Workshop where children can enjoy watching small wooden toys being made right before their eyes.
Perugia: the tradition of the Rocca Paolina Market
The Christmas markets of the Rocca Paolina, in Perugia, have been a tradition for over twenty years. It is undoubtedly unique in its kind because of the venue, the streets of an underground fortress dating back to the 1500’s.
Christmas at the Rocca, also hosts a rich programme of fringe initiatives and events, from December 8 to 24 2018, from 10:00am to 7:30pm from Monday to Friday, and from 10:00am to 8:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Christmas Market in Gubbio
For the “Gubbio è… Natale (Gubbio is…Christmas)” days plenty of quaint, festive and colourful wooden stalls will be set up in Piazza Quaranta Martiri, at the foot of the largest Christmas tree in the world.
In addition to the crafts, decorations and food, there will also be Santa’s train, offering rides for the joy of young and old alike. The Christmas market of Gubbio is open on December 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 15 and 16 2018, and then every day from December 21 through January 6 2019, from 10:00am to 8:00pm.
Terni: much more than a market
The Christmas market is back in Terni‘s Piazza Europa, from December 7 to January 6, in charming cheerfully-lit wooden huts, offering gift ideas and food and wine delicacies.
For Terni, however, Christmas 2018 is looking particularly special for other reasons as well: big trees, Christmas lights, ornaments and holiday music will fill the town centre, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
Markets also at Monte Castello di Vibio
Holiday markets will be set up along the streets of one of the smallest and most charming hamlets of Umbria, for the “Il Paese del Natale … Monte Castello di Vibio” event.
For Christmas, in this town with the smallest theatre in the world, there will be Santa’s House, Befana’s House, a Toy factory, an enchanting artistic nativity scene with moving figures, holiday music and plenty of entertainment.
It takes place from December 2 to January 6.
